National Arboretum Canberra
Arboretum
Nature & Parks
Large, modern park with cedar & oak forests, a lively cafe & a playground with big acorn treehouses.
So much greenery and trees as far as the eye can see. Gorgeous place to get those steps up, beautiful to walk around, great views and the playground was fun for the kids. Parking is easy too, but you have to pay. The restaurant was closed when I came, so no comments there. Would have been amazing to sit inside and enjoy a coffee with a view.

The fog lifted to allow us to see the magnificent views of winter in Canberra. The cork tree forest is a must see, just a short 10 minute easy walk.Bonsai art is fascinating, take the time to read the details of the artists.Sadly limited gluten free options in the cafe, the young staff not very knowledgeable about what GF is .

This place in Canberra is absolutely stunning! The landscape is simply breathtaking. It's one of the iconic spots that truly showcase the beauty of this city. One particular feature that stands out is the bonsai gardens. They are a sight to behold! These gardens beautifully display the artistry and patience involved in creating and maintaining these miniature trees. They add an extra touch of elegance and tranquility to this already amazing place.

A great place to meet or take visitors to Canberra. Beautiful landscaped grounds displaying many of the beautiful species of trees available to this region and many walking (running) paths that wind around each grove. The cafe is open from 9am until 4pm each day and located in a very impressive dome shaped building with beautiful exposed timber beams and glass walls that allow spectacular views across the arboretum grounds and Lake Burleigh Griffin. The cafe provides quite good coffee and a good selection of snack and small plate brunch/lunch food. It can be very busy and counter service only. There is a lovely gift store within the building and plenty of parking, including ‘disabled’ area parking.

A great spot to sit down for 30-40 years to watch the trees grow.In the meantime, you could partake in activities such as drinking coffee, flying kites, attending an event, reading a book, or going for a walk or cycle.Views of the region are quite nice at any time of the day; good sunrises and sunsets, plus decent views at day or night. Speaking of the latter, I wish they would allow entry later in the evening.Parking can be difficult on the weekend at it's a very popular spot; you could loop for over 30 minutes trying to find a free car park. The shop sells kites, but be warned, the different styles do fly differently. Avoid the "pocket" tribe branded ones, and also the spider one. These fly very poorly and are a waste of money. The two multi coloured ones, the grey/green one, and the butterfly all fly well and are surprisingly good fun.Overall, a great spot to spend half a day, or a full day if you want to walk/cycle around all the trails.Edit:Thanks for the response, I will indeed have to check it out when you have extended opening hours during summer. The kite events also sound like great fun too. This edit will likely (and unfortunately) remove your response, but I wanted to up my rating to 5 stars.

This place is a delightful way to spend a few hours wandering, having a picnic, or a snack in the impressive main building. The Bonsai display area is beautifully presented with Bonsai's of all ages and styles. Take a walk in the several growing forests. One minute you are in a Himalayan Forest and the next walking amongst palms. The children's play area is like no other and will hold the attention of any child whilst you enjoy a coffee. The Arboretum is a must see and do for any visit to Canberra.

Lovely open space. Great for just wandering amongst the trees and gardens. It has a busy cafe serving tasty food with many options. There is a park for young children and games for kids including kite flying and find the hidden clue. The outlook from the promenade provides an expansive view of Canberra city.

Beautiful in autumn especially just before sunset. We went there around 4pm on May 9, just as people were making their way out from sun baking. We saw people flying kite, kids rolling down the hill, and it’s dog friendly (with a leash). Perfect for a Sunday picnic.

Booked a tour guide for me and my family (including 2 elderly) during Easter period. The guides were volunteers but very well informed about the arboretum and gave us so much insight about the place and trees planted there. They were really friendly and I definitely recommend a tour if possible.

Wish we had more time to enjoy a whole afternoon here and explore the grounds of which have been impeccably maintained and planned. The architecture and scenery was amazing and was a non-regretable visit we made in our short stop in Canberra. The national Bonsai collection was also very interesting and the art well presented in this Australian setting.Bring a kite to fly in the valley.

Recently, I came here for a few hours to have a look around and enjoy the bonsais and the views. Just outside the main building is the bonsai display room, which was absolutely beautiful and had so much variety in the types of bonsais on display. While I personally don't know much about bonsais, there were amazing staff members nearby who answered heaps of questions we had. After looking at the bonsais, we went back into the main building and grabbed a few books from the gift shop, and tried out one of the cafes for a quick morning tea.Overall, I'd say this is a great place to visit if you like bonsais, or even if you want to go for a long walk or bike ride as there are paths all around the hills.

Loved this extremely interesting venue. Very informative with the Bonsai display being an outstanding feature. Awesome views over Canberra and a place which should be included on bucket list when visiting the National Capital. Entry is by donation. Have a look, it'll be well worth it

This is one of my favourite places in Canberra. It has such beautiful views over many parts of Canberra including Scrivner Dam and Lake Burley Griffin. There are rolling lawns at the back where many families hang out flying kites, rolling own the hill or just lazing / strolling about. There is even a cute community veggie patch that's boasts all the season vegetables and herbs.

Basically, the highlight of my visit here was the Bonsai Collection. They were absolutely stunning. The work that went into this collection was mind boggling. I am really happy we stopped here on our waway into Canberra and wouldn’t hesitate to recommend. Very wheelchair accessible and good amenities.

Such a beautiful place with views of Canberra. Bonsai experience is so stunning with trees over 100 years old, signs everywhere saying please do not touch bonsai. May be challenging if you have little ones. Need to pay for metered parking but well worth it.

As a wedding photographer, I've been to some beautiful wedding venues, but Canberra Arboretum is special! My clients had their intimate ceremony here on top of a hill overlooking the entirety of Arboretum. The place provided a cool, expansive backdrop while the couple said their vows. It's definitely a charming place that appeals to nature lovers and those who like quiet places. The beautiful landscape and facilities offered a refreshing experience, especially for small weddings. The mix of nature and contemporary elegance provides awesome spots for photo opportunities. So, I highly recommend Arboretum!

Easy to access, great for viewing, walking, learning. Bonsai room especially enjoyable. Lounge/eating space attached to the cafe has wide views across the valley and hills beyond. Curatoreum shop stocks gifts and goods not available elsewhere in Canberra. You can make a quick visit or spend hours at the Arboretum. Child-friendly.

Wonderful site - glorious on a sunny near Autumn day… Love the original conception of 100 forests of 100 trees from Australia and afar planted at the turn of the millennium and now maturing. Many of the forests are showing off their autumn foliage at the moment and on a sunny day there were lots of families picnicking and flying kites. Bonsai collection is wonderful too and the cafe not bad…

A delightful surprise, is the National Arboretum. It is a terrific facility for anyone who has even a modicum of activity in their nature. An excellent cafe, large children's play area, attractive places and paths along which one can stroll, and interesting plants, not the least of which is the Bonsai alcove. The grounds are surprisingly large and atop a hill is a most wonderful tribute to one of Australia's great poets: Dorothea McKellar. The location of the arboretum is outstanding for kite-flyers too! Even dogs are welcome, which is great news for their carers. Parking isn't cheap, but nor is it too dear. I'd suggest a minimum of 2 hours for first-time visitors. This is a not-to-be-missed part of the ACT.

Amazing place, beautiful views. You can drive up to viewing spots. There are some free parking slots at the end of the park but a paid one in the centre by the main building. Seems perfect for electric chargers but not in yet.

Absolutely delightful. We were there early morning in autumn, it was 12 degrees and just a magnificent way to start the morning. A gentle walk, coffee and look about the bonsai and interactive gardens was an interactive experience for the entire family. The cafe offers a wide variety of foods and beverages. The entire area is flat and has easy access for mobility accessibility. There were lots of varied seating areas to enjoy the magnificent views.
