The Florida Gulf Coast is a popular destination known for its stunning beaches, clear waters, and vibrant coastal towns. Since we live on Florida’s Gulf Coast and travel extensively year-round, our expertise in determining the most popular Florida vacation spots in Florida Gulf Coast region is based on over 40 years of travel in Florida.
We have been to each of the Florida Gulf Coast vacation spots listed below. Many of them we revisit annually. All are great places to visit in Florida and each is different with unique character and reasons to visit.
Some have stunning beaches and others have attractions that make a Florida vacation a memorable trip. From swimming with manatees in Crystal River to remote shelling trips to Keewaydin Island from Marco Island, there is never a chance of a dull Florida vacation.
The Florida destinations with beaches all feature clear water the Gulf is noted for. Most feature watersports like swimming, fishing, snorkeling, parasailing and popular sunset cruises.
Florida Gulf Coast Vacation Spots We Love
Here are our 14 most popular Florida vacation spots along the Florida Gulf Coast, including their highlights and locations:
Clearwater Beach
- Location: Clearwater, FL (30 minutes west of Tampa)
- Highlights: We must disclose that we live on Clearwater Beach and think it is one of the best places for a vacation on Florida’s Gulf Coast. Our beach is known for its soft, white sand and clear, shallow waters, Clearwater Beach is ideal for families and beachgoers. It offers plenty of water activities like parasailing and jet skiing, plus a lively atmosphere with nearby shops, restaurants, and the famous Pier 60 for sunset. Don’t forget the Clearwater Beach Marine Aquarium, the home of the late Winter the Dolphin. Near Pier 60 is our family’s favorite resort the Opal Sands Resort.
Siesta Key
- Location: Sarasota, FL (one hour south of Tampa)
- Highlights: Siesta Key Beach is famous for its powdery, quartz sand, often ranked among the best beaches in the U.S. It’s a great spot for relaxing, swimming, and enjoying the laid-back island vibe. The nearby Siesta Village offers quaint shops and seafood restaurants. One of the largest beaches on the list of most popular Florida vacation spots in Florida Gulf Coast. Our last stay in 2024 at The Ringling Beach House was comfortable and convenient to everything.
Destin
- Location: Destin, FL (Florida Panhandle one hour east of Pensacola and 90 minutes west of Panama City Beach)
- Highlights: Known as “The World’s Luckiest Fishing Village,” Destin is popular for its emerald-green waters and sugar-white sand. It’s a hotspot for fishing, boating, and water sports, with a family-friendly atmosphere. Henderson Beach State Park and the vibrant HarborWalk Village are key attractions. Destin may be the best-known vacation spot in the Florida Panhandle. We like the Sandestin Hilton when we stay in Destin as a family.
Sanibel Island
- Location: Southwest Florida (near Fort Myers about 25 minutes away)
- Highlights: Sanibel Island is famous for its shell-strewn beaches and natural beauty. It’s a quieter, more serene destination perfect for shelling, birdwatching, and enjoying nature. The J.N. “Ding” Darling National Wildlife Refuge is a must-visit for nature enthusiasts. There are many small hotels on the island but make sure you choose something with beach access. We like the Sunshine Island Inn with quick beach access and a quaint setting.
Naples
- Location: Naples, FL (Southwest Florida 30 minutes south of Fort Myers))
- Highlights: Naples offers upscale shopping, dining, and beautiful, uncrowded beaches. It’s known for its luxury resorts, golf courses, and stunning sunsets. The nearby Everglades National Park provides opportunities for eco-tours and wildlife viewing. One of the top 3 resorts in Florida is the Naples Ritz Carlton on the beach. Expensive and elegant.
Crystal River
- Location: Crystal River is 90 minutes north of Tampa
- Highlights: Vacationing in Crystal River, Florida, offers a unique blend of natural beauty and outdoor adventure, making it an ideal destination for nature enthusiasts and those seeking a peaceful retreat. Known as the “Manatee Capital of the World,” Crystal River is budget-friendly and is one of the few places where you can swim with these gentle giants in their natural habitat. The area is home to pristine springs, including Three Sisters Springs, which offer crystal-clear waters perfect for kayaking, snorkeling, and paddleboarding. In addition to manatee encounters, Crystal River provides access to diverse wildlife, excellent fishing, and beautiful, uncrowded Gulf Coast beaches. The best place to stay on the waterfront (and near the manatee) is the very reasonable Plantation Inn.
Fort Myers Beach
- Location: Fort Myers Beach, FL (an hour south of Sarasota)
- Highlights: A lively beach town known for its wide, sandy beaches and water sports. Fort Myers Beach is great for families and offers plenty of activities, from parasailing to dolphin-watching tours. The Times Square area has numerous shops, bars, and restaurants. Fort Myers Beach is still recovering from Hurricane Ian but they have a brand new Margaritaville Resort right on one of the best Florida Gulf Coast beaches. We were last there in July 2024.
Anna Maria Island
- Location: Bradenton, FL (less than 60 minutes south of Tampa)
- Highlights: Anna Maria Island has a charming, old-Florida feel with laid-back beaches, quaint shops, and local eateries. It’s a great spot for fishing, kayaking, and bike riding. The island’s uncluttered beaches and crystal-clear waters make it a peaceful getaway. Anna Maria Island is not like many top Florida vacation spots in Florida Gulf Coast because there are no big highrises. It is a quaint colorful island getaway. We suggest you try the Bungalow Beach Resort for your stay. One of the most visited Gulf Coast destinations by Florida residents.
Marco Island
- Location: South of Naples, FL (about 30 minutes from Naples on the edge of The Everglades)
- Highlights: Marco Island is the largest of Florida’s Ten Thousand Islands and offers luxury resorts, white-sand beaches, and abundant wildlife. It’s a great destination for both relaxation and adventure, with opportunities for boating, fishing, and exploring nearby nature reserves like Tigertail Beach and Keewaydin Island. The best resort on the island is the JW Mariott Marco Island Beach Resort – it is expensive! The Marco Island Hilton is more budget-friendly for families. We were just at the Marco Hilton in August 2024 and had a great time!

- Highlights: There is a 28-mile scenic drive in Florida called Route 30A. Rosemary Beach is at the eastern end of this decadent and beautiful stretch of beaches. Rosemary Beach is an upscale private community with white sand beaches with perfectly clear waters. Shops, restaurants and boutique hotels line the narrow streets. Lots of water sports, fishing and parasailing available. This is one of the most picturesque destinations on Florida’s Gulf Coast.
